Mark McGwire has come clean, admitting that he used steroids when he broke the home run record in 1998. A big question to be asked however is did he really need steroids to hit homeruns. Being able to hit a homerun does not fully exist in power, sure it helps but it is not the only thing that you need. You also need to have a great swing, and that is something McGwire had. Mark told the MLB that studying the way pitchers threw the ball and cutting down his swing to make it short and compact led to his increase in homeruns. McGwire stated that he used performance-enhancing drugs on and off his career for nearly ten years. Being a great baseball player does not just mean being a good hitter, it also means being a good defensive player. People argue that mark McGwire was not a good first basemen. I think that he played his position very well even though he was much more valuable on the offence side of the field. McGwire also stated that he never used steroids to gain a strength advantage, but for “health purposes”. People could argue back and forth if mark McGwire was really a good player or if the steroids did most of the playing. The big question is does he deserve to be in the hall of fame?

Hey Sports Guy, I'm absolutely torn apart about Mark cheating on the game because of his popularity. He was my favorite player for the longest time and endured in on of the most exciting HR races in baseball history. Do you think someday you will be able to hit homeruns like him?
ReplyDeleteI had a feeling that he did steroids. It seems to be common that a lot of athletes are doing them. It's kind of hard to hide that someone's doing steroids. Even kids in my high school did them to bulk up for the teams.
ReplyDeleteI feel that Mark McGuire even with Steroid usage is not as great of a player as he is made out to be. He was a sub par first basemen anyone who watched him play knows that. His career batting average is around .260, he averaged over 100 strike outs per year. In fact the only thing he really did was hit homeruns, i think a ball player should be more versatile to be considered great.
